Piercing for Halloween—what to wear and what not to do

Piercing can be the most striking part of a costume—or the reason why the piercing takes weeks to heal. Below, we explain what kind of piercing to wear for Halloween and what not to do so the party doesn’t end with an irritation. We also explain how to achieve the look of an earring without getting pierced.

At a Glance

  • Healed piercing: swap out your earring for a Halloween-themed one that’s the same thickness and length as the one you usually wear.
  • Fresh piercing: Don’t change the earring, and don’t apply paint, glitter, fake blood, or glue around it.
  • No piercing: a fake piercing creates the look of a nose or ear piercing without a needle.
  • Material: ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium. Costume earrings usually have an unknown composition.
  • A piercing done a few weeks before October 31 won’t have time to heal in time for the jewelry swap.

What kind of piercing should you wear for Halloween?

It depends on whether your piercing has healed yet. In a healed piercing, you can wear any design as long as you stick to the recommended bar thickness and length. In a healing piercing, any change—even for just one night—irritates the piercing site and prolongs the healing process. Find your situation in the table.

Situation What to Wear What to Avoid
Situation: Healed piercing What to wear: A labret, clicker, or a Halloween-themed ring in your size What to avoid: A thicker post that’s “forced in” and metal of unknown composition
Situation: Fresh piercing What to wear: An earring from the piercer. A Halloween-themed piece in another, healed piercing What to avoid: Changing the earring, the hoop, or applying makeup around the piercing
Situation: No piercing What to wear: A fake piercing nose ring or earring What to avoid: Piercing yourself or getting pierced the day before the party
Situation: Nickel allergy What to wear: Only ASTM F136 titanium What to avoid: Surgical steel and costume jewelry

Don’t know the size of the earring you’re wearing? Measure it with a caliper or check the standard dimensions in the size guide. The notation 1.2x8mm refers to a post that is 1.2 mm thick and 8 mm long—most of our Halloween labret studs come in this size.

What are some Halloween piercing earrings?

The best Halloween earring is one you’ll still wear in November. Instead of costume accessories, choose a titanium piece with a motif that complements a dark look without looking like a costume. You’ll find the entire selection in our Halloween collection.

Bats

A flying bat with outstretched wings needs space, so it looks great in a helix or flat piercing. A smaller bat on a labret stud will fit in the tragus or earlobe.

Spiders and Scorpions

Predatory designs, available in smooth or rhinestone versions that catch the light at a party: a spider, a rhinestone spider (also in a shorter 1.2x6mm version), a scorpion, and a rhinestone scorpion.

Snakes, Thorns, and Spikes

A snake with a rhinestone, a clicker with thorns, a heart with spikes, and a melting heart are perfect for a gothic or punk look.

Skulls

The clicker with three skulls is made of 316L surgical steel, which contains nickel. It’s suitable for a healed septum, daith, or helix piercing, but not if you have a nickel allergy.

Moons

If you prefer a witchy vibe over a horror vibe, choose a moon labret, a radiant crescent moon with cubic zirconia, or a crescent moon clicker for your septum or daith. A 1.6x10mm moon with cubic zirconia is perfect for your navel.

Choose the type of earring based on the piercing location. For the helix, tragus, conch, and earlobe, a labret is the most comfortable—its flat disc won’t rub against your hood. For a healed septum or daith, choose a clicker or horseshoe. Not sure what your piercing is called? Check the Piercing Atlas.

What not to do with your piercing on Halloween?

Don’t apply makeup to a healing piercing, and don’t wear costume jewelry in it. Most Halloween-related problems aren’t caused by the piercing itself, but by what’s going on around it: makeup, glue, masks, wigs, and falling asleep without removing your makeup. A healing piercing is an open wound, and anything you put near it can get inside.

For a party in a crowd, choose flat jewelry. Dangling chains and spikes can easily get caught on a wig, hood, or cape, and a single tug could tear your piercing.

Will you have time to get a new piercing before Halloween?

You’ll have time to get the piercing done, but not to let it heal. The earlobe usually heals in 6–8 weeks, and the ear cartilage in 6–12 months. A piercing done a few weeks before October 31 will still be fresh by Halloween, so you’ll only be able to wear the earring the piercer put in.

If you still want a new piercing, ask the piercer right away for a decorative titanium labret that’s long enough. You can swap out the Halloween-themed piece once it’s healed—in practice, in time for the next Halloween.

For a fresh piercing, choose smooth, polished titanium. ASTM F136 titanium with an internal thread is the safest option. Save movable pendants, chains, and colored finishes for healed piercings. You can read about titanium colors in the guide to anodizing.

How can you get a piercing for Halloween without getting pierced?

Wear a fake piercing. It’s a ring that goes over the side of your nose, the septum, or the edge of your ear—nothing pierces the skin, and after the party, you just take it off.

For your nose, choose a titanium fake earring with a septum look or a steel fake earring for the nostril. For your ear—a double or triple earring, also in black. You’ll find more styles in the fake piercing nose ring and fake piercing ear ring collections.

  1. Apply to clean skin. Put it on before applying makeup so the headband doesn’t slip off.
  2. Press gently. The band should stay in place without feeling tight. If you feel pressure or a tingling sensation, loosen it slightly.
  3. Remove it at night. The fake piercing is not intended for sleeping.

How do you care for your piercing after a Halloween party?

Remove any makeup around the piercing and rinse it with saline solution that same evening, not in the morning.

  1. Wash your hands before touching the piercing area.
  2. Remove any makeup around the piercing. Do this gently, working from the canal outward, so that the makeup doesn’t get into the piercing.
  3. Rinse with saline solution. A sterile 0.9% NaCl ampoule will remove any remaining glitter and powder.
  4. Dry it with a single-use item—a gauze pad or paper towel, not a bath towel.
  5. Check the cap. It can easily come loose after a party. If you lose it, you can buy a replacement separately—a titanium cap with an internal thread.

You’ll find more piercing hygiene products in the “Care” category. If redness, swelling, or pain worsen over the next few days after the event, contact your piercer or a doctor.

Common Mistakes with Halloween Piercings

  • Earrings from a costume or a street vendor—the metal composition is unknown, and the coating may wear off inside the piercing channel.
  • Paint, glitter, and fake blood on a fresh piercing—leave a margin of clean skin around the piercing site.
  • Makeup glue near the earring—the glue and remover irritate healing tissue.
  • A mask that puts pressure on the piercing—a few hours of pressure is a surefire way to cause thickening.
  • Changing the earring in a fresh piercing “just for one night”—reinserting it injures the piercing channel.
  • Sleeping with makeup on—leaving cosmetics on overnight is a common cause of irritation after Halloween.

Questions and Answers

Can I change the earring in a fresh piercing for Halloween?

No. As long as the piercing is healing, you should keep the earring that the piercer put in. The earlobe usually heals in 6–8 weeks, and the ear cartilage in 6–12 months. Wear your Halloween-themed earring in another, fully healed piercing, or choose a fake piercing.

What kind of Halloween earring should you wear in your helix?

For a healed helix, a labret with a charm—such as a bat, spider, or scorpion—is the most comfortable option. The most common sizes are 1.2x6mm or 1.2x8mm—measure the earring you’re currently wearing and order the same size.

Can I wear face paint with a fresh piercing?

You can, but leave a margin of clean skin around the piercing and don’t apply makeup, glitter, fake blood, or glue there. After the party, remove your makeup that same evening and rinse the area around the piercing with saline solution.

Is a fake piercing safe?

Yes, as long as it doesn’t pinch the skin too tightly and you don’t wear it overnight. A fake piercing doesn’t pierce the skin, so it doesn’t require healing. If you have sensitive skin, choose a titanium model.

Can I wear an earring from a costume jewelry store?

It’s better not to. Costume jewelry rarely lists its metal composition; it’s often plated and may contain nickel. For piercings, use an ASTM F136 medical-grade titanium implant.

Will I have time to get a piercing before Halloween?

Get it done—yes; let it heal—no. A piercing done a few weeks in advance will still be fresh by Halloween, so you won’t be able to change the earring. You can ask the piercer for a decorative titanium labret right away.

What should I do if my piercing is irritated after a party?

Rinse it with saline solution; don’t twist the earring or remove it. If redness, swelling, or pain worsens over several days, or if there’s pus, contact your piercer or a doctor.
